FNS Highway of Heroes Graffiti Mural Unveiling “Respect To Fallen Soldiers+Peace”
Fallen Soldiers Memorialized |

Toronto Police Story by Kevin Masterman:
A community tribute to fallen soldiers was unveiled near what is the final stop on the Highway of Heroes.
The Highway of Heroes memorial mural, the culmination of a partnership between the Service and Flemingdon Neighbourhood Services (FNS), adorns a wall near the Coroner's Office of Ontario, where fallen soldiers are brought, along with their families, after they are returned to Canadian soil.
The route from Canadian Forces Base Trenton to Toronto is known as the Highway of Heroes in remembrance of soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Artist Kunal Chandidas said the wall is important to all who worked on it.
"We wanted to show honour and respect for the soldiers and their families," the 18-year-old said, at a August 12 ceremony to unveil the mural. All the artists attended a ceremony for a fallen soldier where emergency services personnel and the public line the route to the Coroner's Office.
"That ceremony definitely made a big difference in giving this mural meaning to us."
Chandidas was joined by four other artists who are working as part of the FNS Graffiti transformation project this summer: Maria Khan, Nazley Pakrow, Satheeskumar Varatharasa and Tanzila Shaikh.
The mural depicts a dove to signify love and peace, poppies as sign of remembrance, and a bridge with saluting emergency services personnel to signify the route where the public gathers to pay their last respects to fallen soldiers.
"It's the last thing they will see before they go inside," Chandidas said.
"We wanted it to be colourful, vibrant and positive."
Canadian Forces Reserves Capt. Bob Kennedy said the families and military appreciate sentiments like this coming from the public.
"The families of the fallen, and the army as a whole, deeply appreciate all these tributes," the 32 Canadian Brigade Group member said.
"They see the community has not forgotten them and that is very comforting."
Jessey Pacho, who led the group of amateur artists on the project, said creating the mural was a special journey over the several weeks it took to complete.
"This is a very important day for us," Pacho said. "People would stop and talk to us and congratulate us."
He said several people told them about having family members in the military and their appreciation for the mural.
"We noticed people in this area started to care about this alleyway."
Pacho and Const. Scott Mills came up with the idea for the memorial wall at that site. Sushi Sky restaurant owner Alan Wang allowed them to use his wall for the project.
